How the CoBS-JDA Works

The Canadian Cognitive Behavioural Sensory Job Demands Analysis (CoBS-JDA) is an objective evaluation of the cognitive, behavioural, and sensory skills required to perform the essential duties of a specific job.

Developed by a group of Canadian occupational therapists, the CoBS-JDA fills the need for a robust, objective tool to measure non-physical work demands. It is administered exclusively by certified or regulated health professionals, such as occupational therapists, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and vocational specialists, who have successfully completed specialized training.

The Assessment Process: Powered by Smart Technology

The CoBS-JDA utilizes a streamlined digital platform to guide assessors through a comprehensive, data-driven evaluation. To maximize efficiency and accuracy, the platform features a built-in AI Assistant that acts as a clinical co-pilot throughout the process.

Step 1: Information Gathering & Job Description
The assessor collects foundational data about the job using written descriptions, on-site meetings, direct observations, and interviews. To streamline this phase, the platform's AI Assistant can instantly synthesize raw input, such as rough assessor notes, employer transcripts, or standard industry codes, into a highly polished, comprehensive job description.

Step 2: Defining the Job Context
Key parameters of the role are documented, including work schedules, reporting requirements, required education, and the specific tools, equipment, and technology used.

Step 3: Identifying Essential Functions and Tasks
The assessor works alongside the employer to pinpoint the Essential Job Functions, the fundamental duties required to accomplish the primary objectives of the role. These functions are then broken down into individual, step-by-step tasks for a more granular assessment.

Step 4: Analyzing the Environment
Work does not happen in a vacuum. The assessor evaluates environmental factors, ranging from the physical workspace to social, cultural, or regulatory dynamics, that may directly impact how the job is performed.

Step 5: AI-Assisted Skill Selection and Rating
For every essential function or task, the primary cognitive, behavioural, and sensory skills must be identified. Based on the documented tasks and job context, the AI Assistant automatically recommends a highly tailored list of relevant skills to evaluate. The assessor then uses their clinical expertise to review, validate, and rate each skill against specific variables, such as duration required, complexity of information processed, or the level of time pressure involved.

Step 6: Scoring the Demands
Based on the assessor's verified selections, the platform automatically calculates a score on a 5-point scale. A rating of 1 represents a low demand, while a rating of 5 indicates a high demand for that specific skill.

Step 7: The Final Report
A comprehensive final report is generated, detailing the job's background, essential functions, and a complete profile of the most important cognitive, behavioural, and sensory skills required.

Why Use the CoBS-JDA?

It is important to note that the CoBS-JDA evaluates the minimum skills demanded by the job itself, not the abilities of the specific person performing it.

By providing a clear, objective baseline, supported by intelligent technology and validated by clinical experts, this report empowers employers, clinicians, and insurers to:

  • Successfully match employees to roles that align with their specific skill sets.

  • Identify exact areas where an employee's abilities may not meet the demands of the job.

  • Target potential areas for effective workplace accommodations or personalized rehabilitation plans.
